5 Reasons To Celebrate Sex

Marvin Gaye was seriously onto something. Ok, let’s break it down. Here’s an excerpt from his song, ‘Sexual Healing’:

‘I want Sexual Healing
Sexual Healing is good for me
Makes me feel so fine, it’s such a rush
Helps to relieve the mind, and it’s good for us
Sexual Healing, baby, is good for me
Sexual Healing is something that’s good for me
And it’s good for me and it’s good to me
My baby ohhh
Come take control, just grab a hold
Of my body and mind soon we’ll be making it
Honey, oh we’re feeling fine
You’re my medicine open up and let me in…’

Oooh, BABY! I get steamy just reading it. Not really, but kind of. Anyway, sex actually is healing. Thank you Marvin. Some of what stands out to me in the above excerpt is ‘relieve the mind’, ‘good for us’, and ‘you’re my medicine’. Sex is medicine. Despite the taboo of sex in our society, the manipulation of women and men to operate as objects instead of actual people, the deeper truth of mindful sex is truly sacred. Here’s why:

5. You’re Made Of It

Ewwwww GROSS. I know, thinking of your parents getting busy isn’t perhaps the prettiest picture, but let’s face it. You are a product of sex. Now that’s one pretty darn important reason to celebrate the act. Without sex, you would not be here in the physical form. Sex allows you to live in the body you currently inhabit.

4. You Will Connect To Your Body

Sex can increase body awareness. Whether this brings up elation, shame, anxiety, or love, it’s crucial to connect to your body and deal with the emotions associated with it if you want to be healthy. Some people go to yoga to connect to their bodies. Some people dance. Some people hike. Some people run on the treadmill for 14 hours straight. Some people have sex. Pick your poison.

3. You Will Feel Naturally Intoxicated

I am not here suggesting you jump on top of every moderately attractive person who crosses your path. I am suggesting you consciously choose a conscious partner who is willing to share an intimate experience (unless you already have a partner). I suggest you establish open and clear communication beforehand. I also recommend you abstain from any intoxicants beforehand. Sex is the intoxicant. Allow it to be that. Use your breath. Make it a meditation. During orgasm, your mind is ‘not’. But you ‘are’. Be present. You will feel high if you do it this way.

2. You Will Feel More Confident

The more you openly express yourself during sex, the more confident you will feel, not only in your body and during the act, but that confidence will translate to your life outside the bedroom (or wherever you ‘do it’). Confidence is attractive and hot. You will become HOT(ter) than you already are.

1. You Will Sleep Better

Sex is on the same level as exercise. It’s pretty self-explanatory from a physical perspective. The more you do it, the more tired you will get (unless you’re just laying there). Using your body in this way with someone you truly feel connected to will increase your level of nourishing relaxation. Also, from a biological perspective, the hormone ‘prolactin’ is produced after climax, which aids in sleep.
